En réalisant lui-même le remake de sa propre version de 1934, Alfred Hitchcock ne fait pas qu'approfondir ou moderniser une brillante mécanique. Il réalise là une oeuvre tout à fait originale. Outre un suspense mené avec brio – la mémorable scène d'une tentative d'assassinat lors d'un concert à l'Albert Hall de Londres en constitue LE morceau d'anthologie, avec son fameux coup de cymbales sur une orchestration effectuée par son fidèle Bernard Herrmann –, le maître du suspense y réintroduit des notations personnelles : le couple en danger, sa dissolution possible face aux dangers de la vie, sa fascination pour les héroïnes blondes. Autre morceau d'anthologie : la célèbre chanson "Que sera sera" montée en parallèle dans la scène finale et qui obtient l'Oscar en 1956.

Epaulé par son chef opérateur favori Robert Burks à la photo pour un splendide Technicolor, par James Stewart – Fenêtre sur cour, La Corde– et Doris Day en mère angoissée et émouvante à l'interprétation, Sir Alfred réussit un excellent divertissement, qu'il qualifie lui-même de "tranche de gâteau".
